There are many ways you can access the funds in your health savings account.  Here are some examples:

• Write a check from your Health Savings Account.
• Use a check / debit card.  (Visa/Mastercard)
• Send in a withdrawal form.
• Have the insurance company automatically send the funds from your Health Savings Account to pay the medical bills, based on the claims they have received.

Each insurance company may vary in the way it allows you to access the funds in your Health Savings Account.  Shop around for an HSA that suites your needs.  Keep in mind, you can also set up a Health Savings Account through a private bank of your choice, rather than having the insurance company administer your account.  This may be a better option if you intend to invest the money in mutual funds and such.  Most insurance companies will only offer a basic interest bearing health savings account.
